The overall process involves multiple stages: preliminary treatment to remove large debris, primary treatment to settle out solids, secondary treatment to biologically break down organic matter, and tertiary treatment to further purify the water.
Stages of treatment
  • Preliminary treatment:Removes large objects like plastic, paper, and grit using screens and grit chambers to protect downstream equipment.
  • Primary treatment:Wastewater is held in large tanks to allow heavy solids to settle at the bottom (forming sludge) and lighter materials like oil and grease to float to the surface (forming scum), which are then skimmed off.
  • Secondary treatment:Uses biological processes, such as activated sludge systems, where aerobic bacteria break down remaining organic pollutants.
  • Tertiary treatment:A final stage that further purifies the water to meet specific standards. This can include disinfection (using UV radiation or chlorination), filtration, and removal of dissolved minerals.
