About Sewage Treatment Plants

A sewage treatment plant (STP) isa facility that cleans wastewater to remove harmful contaminants before it is discharged back into the environment or reused. These plants use a multi-stage process, typically including preliminary, primary, secondary, and sometimes tertiary treatments, to purify sewage from homes and businesses. This process is essential for protecting public health and aquatic ecosystems by preventing pollution from raw sewage.
Stages of sewage treatment
  • Preliminary treatment:
This initial stage removes large debris like rags and grit from the wastewater through screening and grit removal processes.
  • Primary treatment:
Wastewater flows into large tanks where heavier solid particles settle to the bottom, and lighter materials like oil and grease float to the top, allowing them to be skimmed off.
  • Secondary treatment:
This stage uses biological processes to remove dissolved and suspended organic matter.Microorganisms, such as bacteria, are used to break down waste, with the help of oxygen in the process.
  • Tertiary treatment:
This is an advanced stage that further cleans the water, often involving processes like filtration and disinfection (e.g., using chlorine or UV light) to remove remaining pollutants, nutrients, and pathogens.
Why STPs are important
  • Protects public health:
Treating sewage prevents the spread of diseases caused by bacteria and viruses found in raw wastewater.
  • Protects the environment:
It prevents pollutants from raw sewage from contaminating rivers, lakes, and oceans.
  • Conserves water:
Treated water can be reused for non-potable purposes, like agricultural irrigation or industrial use, which helps conserve freshwater resources.
  • Protects aquatic life:
Without treatment, sewage can deplete the oxygen in water bodies, harming fish and other aquatic life that need oxygen to survive.
