An induced draft (ID) cooling tower is a mechanical type of cooling tower with one or more fans at the top that pull air upwards through the tower, counter to the downward flow of water. This counter-flow design creates higher heat transfer efficiency, as the coolest water at the bottom contacts the driest air, and the warmest water at the top contacts the most humid air. The towers are typically square or round, use evaporative cooling, and are common in industrial and power plant applications for dissipating large amounts of waste heat.

How it works

Water distribution: Hot water is pumped to the top of the tower and distributed over a fill material, either through a static branch system or a sprinkler, to maximize contact with the air.
Air intake: Air enters the tower at the bottom through louvered openings.
Air movement: Fans located at the top of the tower pull the air upwards through the fill and water.
Cooling process: As the air passes through the water, some of the water evaporates, which cools the remaining water.
Discharge: The warm, moist air is discharged out the top of the tower, while the cooled water collects at the bottom and is sent back to the facility.
