About Cross Flow Cooling Towers

A crossflow cooling tower isa type of heat exchange system where hot water is cooled by air flowinghorizontallythrough it, perpendicular to the water'sverticaldownward flow. Hot water enters the top and is distributed over a fill material, where it comes into contact with air drawn in from the sides by fans. Evaporative cooling occurs, transferring heat from the water to the air, which then exits through the top. The cooled water collects in a basin at the bottom and is then recirculated.
How it works
  • Water distribution:Hot water enters the tower at the top and is distributed evenly over the fill media by a system of nozzles or holes in a hot water basin.
  • Air intake:Fans, typically induced-draft axial type, draw air in from the sides of the tower through louvers.
  • Heat exchange:The air travels horizontally across the fill media, coming into direct contact with the water. As the water falls, it breaks into smaller droplets or thin films on the fill, increasing the surface area for contact. Evaporation occurs, which cools the remaining water.
  • Air and water exit:The now-warmed and moisture-laden air is then expelled from the top of the tower.
  • Cooled water collection:The cooled water drips from the fill into a collection basin at the bottom of the tower and is then pumped back into the industrial process.
