About Liquid Chillers

A liquid chiller isa machine that removes heat from a liquid, such as water, oil, or a glycol mixture, and circulates it to cool processes, equipment, or environments. It uses a refrigeration cycle to transfer heat, with the cold liquid then being used to cool applications in industries like HVAC, manufacturing, food processing, and medicine. Chillers can be air-cooled, water-cooled, or evaporatively cooled, differing in their method of dissipating heat.
How it works
  • A chiller circulates a liquid through a closed loop.
  • As the liquid absorbs heat from a process or equipment, it becomes warmer.
  • The warmed liquid then passes through an evaporator, where a refrigerant absorbs the heat, causing the refrigerant to evaporate into a gas.
  • The gas is then compressed, increasing its pressure and temperature.
  • This hot, high-pressure gas moves to a condenser, where it releases the heat to the outside environment via air or water.
  • The refrigerant condenses back into a liquid and passes through an expansion valve, which lowers its pressure and temperature, preparing it to absorb heat again in the evaporator.
Types of liquid chillers
  • Air-Cooled Chillers:Dissipate heat to the ambient air using condenser coils and fans. They are common for small to medium applications and do not require a water source for cooling.
  • Water-Cooled Chillers:Use water and cooling towers to reject heat. They are typically more efficient than air-cooled chillers and are suited for large-scale industrial and commercial applications.
  • Evaporatively Cooled Chillers:Use the evaporation of water to cool a coil. They offer higher efficiency than air-cooled chillers but generally lower than water-cooled systems.
  • Thermoelectric Liquid Chillers:Use thePeltier effectto cool or heat a liquid circuit. They are used for spot cooling in applications where space is limited.
Common applications
  • HVAC:Large-scale air conditioning for commercial buildings.
  • Industrial Manufacturing:Cooling machinery for plastics injection molding, metalworking, laser cutting, and die casting.
  • Food and Beverage:Cooling ingredients and maintaining process temperatures.
  • Medical and Pharmaceutical:Maintaining precise temperatures for medical imaging, diagnostics, and laboratory chemicals.
  • Data Centers:Cooling server rooms.
